The Best Midsize luxury suvs are the ones that offer the best of both worlds: Nimbler proportions and notably improved fuel-economy grades as compared to the full-sizers, backed by more room, more power and more premium amenities than offered in the smaller choices.
But though their advantages may be clear, exactly what counts as a “midsize” SUV certainly isn’t. Consider: While mainstream midsize cars are all surprisingly similar in length—eight of them are between 190.7 and 191.8 inches long—the SUV and crossover categories haven’t really coalesced around any sort of standard measurements. So even as the vehicles here all hover around the 190-inch mark for length, there’s also a fair amount of variance, and potential customers with a specific focus on size should do their comparisons carefully. Following are the top 10 Midsize Luxury SUVs:
10. Acura MDX:
The MDX lists spirited handling as one of its key attributes; we think it offers some of the most fun you can have with a vehicle that has three rows of seats. All models come with a 290-hp V-6, a nine-speed automatic and front-wheel drive, but we recommend the all-wheel-drive version (known as Super Handling All-Wheel Drive). The MDX is quick and quiet; braking and handling are above average. Our main disappointment is the bland exterior styling. But sometimes it’s good to go incognito, right?
9. BMW X5:
The BMW X5 handles like the company’s famed sports sedans, which is the top reason to consider this crossover. With an optional third row, its flexibility and styling make it one of our favorites. A 300-hp turbocharged inline-six is standard; a 445-hp twin-turbo V-8 and a 255-hp turbodiesel inline-six are optional. The plug-in hybrid combines a turbo four-cylinder with an electric motor for 308 hp. Its electric-only range is just 14 miles; we recorded a disappointing 21 MPGe in our testing.
